Name of Feature/Request: Add dark mode feature for Striven
What financial, time savings, or quality of life improvements will occur from this: Be able to use Striven in dark mode.
Attempted Solutions So Far: Utilize a dark mode browser extension such as https://darkreader.org/. We fear a security issue with using an extension. Seems like whoever owns the extension can access the data on whatever page the extension has access to.
Digging deep - Any additional Why behind this request / How was this accomplished before Striven in what system or software:
Adding my comments here to merge into this request:
Reasoning: Many users prefer dark mode, or have light sensitivity needs that would benefit from dark mode. Many extensions can do this or chrome overrides but this can cause formatting issues with notes for non-dark mode users. Implementing this at the Striven level would be the best option to ensure all formatting retains the proper layout.
Benefits: As earlier mentioned, some users may have light sensitivity needs or overall eye strain for those of us with Miles as IT support having to face multiple monitors and tabs open as we operate, and every one is different with how they view and work. Dark mode as an option would help remedy this.
This was discussed with the product team and given that Chrome has a built in feature for Dark Mode, we encourage using this - As some have reported, it does cause some formatting issues. If any users come across formatting issues using Chrome Dark Mode or another dark mode plugin, please report these to Striven Support and we will review and try to ensure Striven adapts well to native dark mode readers.
this is inaccurate–chrome has no dark mode. i am less concerned with a dark mode than a distinct icon set for colorvision impaired users. presently this is not possible.
I was checking for other submissions, it doesn’t look like an icon set for color vision impaired or really users with any visually impairments has been requested before. If you’d like to submit a new topic for that please do.
This setting that you’re referencing only affects a few UI elements and isn’t really an actual dark mode after testing.
However, if you type “chrome://flags” into your browser this will bring up experimental mode, search the word dark which will bring up “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents” then use the drop down box and change default to enabled. You’ll need to relaunch chrome for this to take affect. This experimental dark mode isn’t as good as the dark reader chrome extension in my opinion although I’d imagine it’s more secure and also less resource heavy than dark reader.
Thank you for the better advice. The first is more chrome’s theme whereas the setting you referenced handles the bulk of the site.
This is the setting that we would recommend using - we do not recommend using an extension if you have concerns about security.
While this isn’t perfect, if there are any elements that do not show up correctly using this method we will adjust them accordingly. Please just submit them as support requests to help prioritize the ones that impact you the most.
