Flexibility with Chart of Accounts Parent/Child relationship

I would like the ability to have like kind accounts roll up to a parent so I could see detail or gross amounts. So, if I had five different payroll expense accounts and on a daily basis, I want to look it all five detail accounts but at interim times I want to just look at total labor but I can’t because the accounts do not roll up to a parent. They may roll to Cost of Goods Sold or Other Expenses but I want them to roll to a "primary GL account>

To do that you would need to create new accounts where you want them, then remap your setup to the new accounts. To clean up your history, you could make monthly, quarterly, or annual journal entries to move existing numbers where you want them. Once everything is clean, then you can make the original bad accounts inactive.

Keep in mind if you moved from Quickbooks, Striven doesn’t handle the parent-child relationship the same way. Striven handles it like most accounting software packages, where the parent account is simply a file cabinet to place the folders of the other accounts. Quickbooks uses the parent account as a larger bucket that both rolls up and can contain its own data. It’s super messy. In Striven, parent accounts should be set to not be able to be posted to in order to keep them clean and cause less confusion.

A different way to do this would be to assign divisions or categories to transactions and sort them that way, but if you are trying to keep from moving to the enterprise version, it’s tough to stay under the limits.

Finally, the easy way is to leave Striven as-is and create a spreadsheet that remaps your accounts the way you want them. Then you can link several different tabs of custom reports in that spreadsheet to a dashboard for your bird’s eye view.
